Need for Speed Carbon has received an unofficial Android port based on the Xbox 360 version. The project uses static recompilation to transform the game’s PowerPC code into C++ and run it on ARM64 phones with native Vulkan rendering.
In other words, the phone does not need to emulate a complete Xbox 360 to play this 2006 classic. While still experimental, the port can already launch the campaign, with menus, videos, cars, environments, touch controls and gamepad support.
Need for Speed Carbon runs natively on Android
The project uses ReXGlue to recompile the game’s code and reuses parts of the renderer created for the Need for Speed Most Wanted 2005 port.
The default Android mode uses a native Vulkan renderer. An alternative mode based on Xenos, the Xbox 360’s original GPU, is more demanding and mostly serves as a compatibility option.
According to the project’s documentation, a Galaxy S25 Ultra can run the game near 60 FPS at 1280×720. It has also been tested at 1920×1080. The team notes occasional stuttering, and compatibility with other phones is still being evaluated.
Also runs on Poco X7 Pro and Poco F7
A recent test showed the port running on a Poco X7 Pro and Poco F7.
Both devices generally delivered 50 to 60 FPS, with occasional dips into the 40s while new shaders and scenery loaded.
The test also revealed early-build problems, including minor audio glitches and one incorrect character texture.
Fully customizable on-screen controls
The mobile version has virtual touch buttons that can be repositioned, resized, hidden and adjusted for transparency.
Players can use Bluetooth or USB controllers too, and a gamepad was recognized automatically in testing.
The launcher lets users set internal resolution, VSync, language and frame-rate limits of 30, 60, 90 or 120 FPS. Higher frame rates remain experimental.

Original Xbox 360 files are still required
Like other recompilation projects, the APK does not include the Need for Speed Carbon game files.
Users must provide files extracted from a compatible copy of the Xbox 360 version. The tested build uses the English PAL edition and requires default.xex alongside the NFS and Movies folders.
Files from the PC version do not work with this build. On the first run, the application generates shaders directly on the phone; around 6 GB of free space is recommended.
Android 8, ARM64 and Vulkan 1.1
Current requirements include Android 8 or later, an ARM64 processor and a Vulkan 1.1-compatible GPU.
While already playable, the port remains in development. Full races, saved games and compatibility with a larger range of phones still need testing.
Nevertheless, seeing the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed Carbon run directly on Android is further evidence that recompilation projects are opening another way to bring classic games to phones.
