Burnout Revenge Comes to Android as a Native Port, Now Available to Download

Burnout Revenge, one of the most popular racing games of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 era, can now be played on Android without a traditional emulator. The Criterion Games classic has received an unofficial mobile port using recompilation technology to turn the game’s original code into a program that can run on modern devices.

The project is called Xerenge and was developed by a programmer known as shipa-2. The port is based on the Xbox 360 version of Burnout Revenge, with builds now available for Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS.

A YouTube video from the Arkandiel channel showcases the project and demonstrates how to install it on a smartphone.

Burnout Revenge for Android uses recompilation instead of Xbox 360 emulation

The technology behind this port is what makes it particularly interesting. Rather than running Burnout Revenge through an Xbox 360 emulator, as is the case with many older games, Xerenge uses static recompilation.

This technique converts the original game’s PowerPC code ahead of time into code compatible with other processor architectures, including the ARM64 chips used in Android smartphones.

In practice, this removes some of the extra processing required to emulate the Xbox 360 CPU, allowing the game to make better use of the phone’s hardware. The project still relies on compatibility components to reproduce certain console functions.

Xerenge also includes its own graphics renderer, called Plume, which uses the Vulkan API to handle graphics.

According to the developer, Burnout Revenge can already run races at 60 frames per second on compatible hardware. The classic Crash mode is also available and originally runs at 30 FPS, just as it did on the console.

Performance may vary depending on the device’s processor, GPU, and graphics drivers.

The Android version features touchscreen controls and gamepad support

One advantage of the port is that Burnout Revenge has been adapted specifically for smartphones. The project includes virtual on-screen controls and lets players rearrange the buttons, making it easier to play on a touchscreen.

Players who prefer a more console-like experience can also use compatible physical controllers.

The project provides a variety of graphics settings, including resolution adjustments, visual effects, and widescreen support.

Another interesting feature is online multiplayer through a community-run server. This restores some of the game’s online functionality even though Electronic Arts shut down its original services.

However, the port is still under development. Its creator acknowledges minor graphical issues, including occasional texture rendering glitches.

One of the most entertaining racing games on PlayStation 2

Originally released in 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, Burnout Revenge received an enhanced Xbox 360 version in 2006.

The game became known for its incredibly fast races, spectacular crashes, and gameplay that actively encouraged players to wreck their opponents’ vehicles.

Unlike traditional racing simulators, Burnout Revenge delivers a fully arcade-style experience. Winning is not just about reaching the finish line first: players can also eliminate rivals by ramming, shoving, and pulling off dangerous maneuvers.

One of its major innovations over earlier entries was the ability to hit traffic traveling in the same direction as the race, turning ordinary cars into obstacles for opponents.

The game is also remembered for its Crash mode, in which players aim to cause enormous pileups to earn points and inflict as much damage as possible.

Over the years, Burnout Revenge has become one of the most fondly remembered arcade racing games, alongside Burnout 3: Takedown and Burnout Paradise.

How to download Burnout Revenge for Android

An experimental version of Burnout Revenge for Android is now available for free on GitHub. Update 0.4.9, released on October 29, 2026, introduced compatibility improvements, graphics optimizations, and new features.

To install it, users need a 64-bit Android device with a Vulkan-compatible GPU. The project supports Adreno and Mali graphics, although not every device will necessarily run it correctly.

The app is distributed as an APK and initially acts as an installer. After launching it, users must select the files from their own compatible copy of Burnout Revenge for Xbox 360.

Both the North American and European versions are supported. The project does not distribute Burnout Revenge’s commercial game files, which remain the property of Electronic Arts.

The Xerenge APK can be downloaded for free from GitHub (Android).

Electronic Arts has not released an official version of Burnout Revenge for Android or iOS.

This port is another example of the progress being made in recompiling PC and console games for smartphones. Such technology is giving older games a new lease on life on Android, with more direct execution and less reliance on traditional emulators.
