ARMSX3 arrives on Google Play and brings PS3 emulation to Android phones

Playing PlayStation 3 games directly on a phone just got a little easier. ARMSX3, one of the most advanced PS3 emulation projects currently available on Android, has officially launched on the Google Play Store.

The app had already been available for several months through GitHub, but it can now be installed directly from Google’s store without manually downloading an APK.

ARMSX3 is free, open source and based on RPCS3, the well-known PlayStation 3 emulator for computers. The Android version adapts the project for ARM64 processors and includes optimizations designed specifically for smartphones.

PS3 on Android with Snapdragon 865 and 8 GB of RAM

As impressive as it is, PlayStation 3 emulation remains extremely demanding.

According to the developers, ARMSX3’s minimum requirements include:

  • Android 11 or newer;
  • 64-bit ARMv8.1 processor;
  • Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 870 or equivalent;
  • Adreno 650, Mali-G57 or better GPU;
  • Vulkan 1.1 support;
  • 8 GB of RAM.

This configuration is mainly intended for lighter games. For a better experience, the recommended hardware is considerably more powerful.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is recommended

To run a larger number of games, ARMSX3 recommends a device with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or better, Adreno 740 GPU and at least 12 GB of RAM.

The configuration considered ideal uses Snapdragon 8 Elite, Adreno 830, 12 GB of RAM or more and, if possible, some form of active cooling.

The developers also recommend using custom graphics drivers whenever possible. On Snapdragon devices, Turnip drivers can improve compatibility and performance in certain games.

Demon’s Souls, Gran Turismo and Ratchet & Clank have already received improvements

The emulator continues to receive frequent performance and stability updates.

Games mentioned recently include Demon’s Souls, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Gran Turismo 5, Gran Turismo 6 and titles from the Ratchet & Clank series.

That does not mean every one of these games will run perfectly on any compatible phone.

Titles that heavily stress the PS3 CPU or SPUs can still deliver low performance even on flagship smartphones.

ARMSX3 is based on RPCS3

The app itself makes it clear that this is a port of RPCS3 for ARM64 devices.

The goal is to take advantage of years of work on the PC emulator while adapting recompilers, interface and rendering for the ARM processors used in phones.

ARMSX3 also does not include games or PlayStation 3 firmware. Users need to install the console’s official firmware and use dumps of their own games.

PS3 emulation on phones is still in its early stages

Even with its arrival on Google Play, expectations should be kept realistic.

Emulating a PlayStation 3 remains one of the most demanding tasks a smartphone can face. The ARMSX3 team itself warns that mid-range devices are not the project’s focus and that performance varies considerably from game to game.

Even so, seeing a PS3 emulator at this level available directly on Google Play shows how quickly ARM emulation has advanced.

A few years ago, running PlayStation 3 games on a phone seemed far away. In 2026, we already have titles from the console running on Android devices with Snapdragon 865 — and compatibility should continue to improve as both hardware and the emulator evolve.
