PlayStation 4 emulation on Android has just taken one of those leaps that seem hard to believe. Bloodborne is already running between 30 and 50 FPS on Android smartphones using Bachata S4, a project based on shadPS4 and developed specifically for ARM64 devices.
The breakthrough was demonstrated in a video published by the K1RA channel, which showed Bloodborne running during gameplay and reaching a range close to 40 FPS in various situations. In lighter areas and using extremely low resolutions, the game even came close to 60 FPS.
The result is impressive mainly due to the speed of the evolution. According to K1RA, about two weeks ago Bloodborne could already get into the game on Android, but it ran in slow motion because it didn’t reach the 30 FPS needed to maintain the game’s normal speed. Now, with new optimizations and patches, the scenario has completely changed.
Bloodborne runs between 30 and 50 FPS on Android
In the tests presented by K1RA, Bloodborne appears running generally in the 30 to 50 FPS range, depending on the area and the settings used.
This doesn’t mean the game is completely perfect or that all phones will be able to achieve the same performance. We’re talking about a PS4 emulator still in an experimental stage, with extremely high requirements and several stability issues.
Even so, being able to control the character and explore Bloodborne’s scenarios with frame rates close to or even higher than those originally found on the PlayStation 4 represents a huge advancement for emulation on Android.
Previously, the game barely opened and crashed within the first few minutes. In just 2 months, it’s already possible to play entire sessions of the game.
Performance also varies greatly depending on the resolution. K1RA even ran a test at 360p, drastically reducing the graphical load. The result looked quite compromised visually, but it allowed the counter to approach 60 FPS in certain areas.
Bachata S4 0.1.9 brings patches that changed performance
The main driver behind the new test is Bachata S4, an experimental PlayStation 4 emulator for Android based on the shadPS4 core.
The video uses version 0.1.9, which brought a particularly important change for heavier games: a patch system integrated into the emulator.
These patches allow modifying certain parameters before the game runs. In Bloodborne’s case, some changes can disable or reduce graphical effects that consume a lot of resources.
Among the options used in the test are the removal of post-processing effects, anti-aliasing, motion blur, and certain shadows. The idea is to reduce the work needed to render each frame and, consequently, increase performance.
There’s also a patch to unlock the frame rate, allowing it to exceed Bloodborne’s traditional 30 FPS limit.
Patches were important even for Bloodborne on PC
This type of modification isn’t new in the history of Bloodborne emulation.
On PC itself, patches and modifications played an important role during the early stages of shadPS4’s development, helping to work around graphical issues, improve performance, and allow the game to advance further and further within the emulator.
Now a similar approach is starting to be used on Android, where the limitation of power and memory makes these optimizations even more important.
RAM consumption is still gigantic
Despite the performance leap, there are still major obstacles ahead.
One of them is RAM memory consumption. During the test, memory usage grows significantly, and crashes related to memory leaks can still occur.
The problem becomes especially complicated on smartphones because CPU and GPU share the same memory. Unlike a dedicated PC graphics card, there isn’t a large separate amount of VRAM available exclusively for graphics.
Therefore, devices with lots of RAM and top-of-the-line processors remain practically mandatory at this stage of development.
Two months ago, Bloodborne wasn’t even close to this
Perhaps the most impressive part is comparing this result with the state of PS4 emulation on Android just a few months ago.
According to K1RA, the journey began with works derived from shadPS4 adapted for Android, when even relatively simple games still had issues.
Bloodborne initially only advanced through the boot screens. Then it started rendering parts of the game. Next, it managed to reach gameplay, but still ran in slow motion.
Now the title already appears running between 30 and 50 FPS in certain situations.
It’s a particularly impressive evolution because Bloodborne is precisely one of the games that most drove shadPS4’s development on PC. The FromSoftware exclusive never received an official version for computers, making emulation one of the only ways to run the game outside of a PlayStation console.
It still doesn’t mean perfect Bloodborne on mobile
Despite the impressive images, it’s important to put the result into perspective.
Bachata S4 is still an experimental project. Memory issues, crashes, graphical glitches, and huge performance differences between devices remain part of the experience.
There’s also no guarantee that a rate close to 40 FPS will be maintained throughout the entire campaign. The numbers presented represent specific situations shown during the tests.
Even the project itself currently treats Bloodborne as a game that can reach gameplay, not as a title whose entire campaign has already been validated without issues.
PS4 emulation on Android is evolving too fast
Still, it’s hard not to be impressed by the pace of this evolution.
For years, imagining a game like Bloodborne running directly on a smartphone seemed like something reserved for the distant future. Now we’re no longer just talking about opening menus or showing a boot screen: the character can already be controlled, the scenarios are rendered, and performance is starting to enter a truly playable range.
Naturally, there’s still a long way to go until PS4 on Android is as simple as emulating older consoles. But looking at how much the project has evolved in just a few months, it’s increasingly hard to predict where this scene will be a year from now.
